Miami Shores Guide | Guide to Living in Miami Shores

Miami Shores

Located just north of the downtown Miami area, but just south of North Miami, Miami Shores is one of the oldest villages in this region of Florida. This area of Miami combines history with the vibrancy of modern living. For well over a century, Miami Shores has been the home to many residents, both old and young alike.

The development of Miami Shores started just after the turn of the 20th century when most of the land was occupied by various plantations, groves, a starch mill, saw mill, and tomato packing plant. By 1922, much of the land was purchased for residential development as the land boom was just beginning. Lee T. Cooper was responsible for much of the development, creating Bay View Estates and transforming the area into what would be known as the “American Mediterranean”.

While North Miami and the city of Miami itself were rapidly developing, the Miami Shores area quickly separated itself from the two. Over the following decades, the area continued to develop, and the prime location became home to both young couples and families who worked in the greater Miami area and retired seniors who enjoyed the affordable housing amid the warm, tropical temperatures.

In terms of housing, you’ll find many Mediterranean-style homes that date back almost a century combined with Spanish Colonial Revival homes, many of which offer gardens. This makes Miami Shores a tranquil area to work and raise a family.

The real advantage of living in Miami Shores apart from the excellent housing, is the location. With downtown Miami just a few minutes away, commuting back and forth is relatively easy. Plus, thanks to the extensive highway system, you can get to most parts of the city quickly and easily.

Activities: Arch Creek Park is a special attraction in Miami Shores, offering peaceful surroundings that includes a beautiful 40-foot natural limestone bridge. Add to this the Museum of Contemporary Art which displays the works of both contemporary and famous modern artists along with the Miami Shores Country Club and you have plenty of things to do.

Universities: In addition to commuting, the area itself offers several advantages, such as being the location of Florida International University and Barry University which are just minutes away. You’ll also find three top-of-the-line medical centers and a host of other attributes that make this a great place to live.

Nightlife: Although Miami Shores is the perfect place for families, it also has its share of nighttime activities. From the many different restaurants, cafés, and nightclubs that surround the area to the country club itself that offers Friday night jazz in the lounge area, there are plenty of places to go at night when you want to relax and unwind.

Miami Shores not only offers people of all ages plenty of things to do, but it is located just minutes away from many of the great attractions that the city of Miami has to offer. Add to this the plethora of choices when it comes to living in houses, condominiums, or renting property and you have arguably the perfect place to live.
