Affectionately called “The Grove”, Coconut Grove is the oldest community in Miami-Dade County that has been continuously inhabited. Bordered by Biscayne Bay to the east, Lejeune Road to the west, North Prospect Drive to the south, and the Rickenbacker Causeway to the north, Coconut Grove is one of the greenest areas in all of Miami.
Although not officially established until 1925, the history of Coconut Grove goes back a century earlier when waves of immigrants came to this section of Miami. The name comes from Horace P. Porter, who rented a home in the area back in 1873. The neighborhood quickly grew, which included the establishment of the first hotel in South Florida, the Bayview Inn, now called the Peacock Inn.
The Barnacle Historic State Park is the location of the oldest home in Miami-Dade County, built in 1891. By 1925, Coconut Grove was annexed by the City of Miami after being an independent city for some time. Surges in population from the land boom of the 1920s to the explosion of residential complexes in the 1970s and 1980s established the community
